2005: A chance encounter in the moutains of Santiago
A friend gave me some money to take the sisters on a picnic. (One of the sisters remarked, “No one has ever given us money to go on a picnic before!!!) We went to the “Waterfall of the Spirits,” a camping, hiking, white-water rafting, picnicking area that also has a restaurant. This beautiful spot in the mountains is about an hour out of Santiago, high enough to be free from smog with pure mountain air and a river below.

We spent practically the whole day there. We even had enough money to go back a second time. The second time we were there, this young woman at the table across from us said “Sister Yvette?” My mind raced backward in time to remember her face.“I’m Carolyn. Do you remember me? My daughter was born at the Refuge in 1990. Now she is 15.”

1990 - that was the year we started the infant stimulation program at the refuge. I remember how Carolyn had worked so hard with Laura. “How is Laura,” I asked.” “Super bien. She has always gotten good marks in school. She is very studious and very intelligent.” “That is because you worked so hard with her at the Refuge,” I said. Tears came down her cheek (mine, too.) “I couldn’t believe that that was really you. You were a real mom to me.” I had seen Carolina about 6 years ago. She was a single mom working in a disco. She made enough money to buy a house and keep her daughter in school. Now she married a navigational engineer from Holland and they have two small children. “I am doing very well now,” she said. “I think of you often and am so very grateful for the Refuge at that part of my life. I was only 15 when Laura was born.” What touched me most was the fact that had we left an hour sooner or not returned a second time, we would have missed her. It was one of those things that was meant to be! I saw the love of God for Caroline and me that day. How I love how Providence works! |
